Got my credit card statement last month.
$187 on AI subscriptions.
What the hell?
Started adding up everything. ChatGPT Plus from January. Claude Pro from when I needed "better writing." Gemini because someone on Twitter said it was amazing for research. That Perplexity subscription I literally forgot existed for 3 months.
My wife saw the statement. That was a fun conversation. "You're paying HOW MUCH to talk to computers?"
The Simple Math Nobody Does
Here's the breakdown of my peak AI subscription madness:
The Main Three:
- ChatGPT Plus: $20 (use it daily, can't live without it)
- Claude Pro: $20 (for anything that humans will read)
- Gemini Advanced: $20 (research and fact-checking)
The "Forgot to Cancel" Gang:
- Perplexity: $20 (3 months of nothing)
- Jasper: $39 (tried once)
- Copy.ai: $35 (also tried once)
Quick math? $80-100 monthly if you're serious about AI. That's a Netflix + Spotify + Disney+ + HBO subscription. For chatbots.
The Hidden Costs That Actually Hurt
But money's just part of it.
My password manager has 12 different AI logins. TWELVE. Each with 2FA because I'm paranoid. That's 24 codes to deal with.
Time Vampires:
- Deciding which AI to use: 10 minutes minimum
- Copying context between services: another 10
- Finding that brilliant prompt from last week: 30 minutes (it was in Claude)
- Rebuilding lost chats: hours
Remember when Claude went down during that important client presentation? Had to rebuild everything in ChatGPT. Two hours gone.
Or when I hit GPT-4's message limit at 2pm. In the middle of debugging. Had to wait 3 hours or switch to Claude (who can't code). Chose to wait. Deadline wasn't happy.
My Browser Bookmarks Tell The Story
Just counted. 47 bookmarks in my "AI Tools" folder.
FORTY. SEVEN.
There's shit in there I don't even remember signing up for. "AI Writing Assistant Pro"? "SmartWrite AI"? What the fuck is "Writesonic"?
Each bookmark represents me thinking "this will solve everything." Narrator: it didn't.
The Optimization Attempts (All Failed)
Attempt #1: The Calendar System
Made a Google Calendar for canceling subscriptions. Color coded. Reminders set. Worked for exactly one month before I started ignoring the notifications.
Attempt #2: The Spreadsheet
Built an Excel tracker. Which AI for what task. Strengths, weaknesses, pricing. Even had formulas calculating cost-per-use.
My coworkers saw it. Now I'm "the AI spreadsheet guy."
Still didn't help.
Attempt #3: Going Solo
"I'll just use ChatGPT for everything!"
Day 1: This is fine Day 3: Missing Claude's writing already
Day 7: Back to multiple subscriptions
Attempt #4: The API Route
Spent an entire weekend setting up API access. Custom interface. All models in one place. Felt like a genius.
Monday morning: Everything broke. Some update changed the endpoints. Back to square one.
Finding Multi-Model Services
Started googling "all AI models one subscription" at 1am (yes, I was desperate).
Found a bunch. Poe, AskGPT App, You.com, whatever else. Most were sketchy or expensive or both.
AskGPT App seemed legit. Found this detailed review where someone tested it against paying for separate subscriptions. Saved them like $40/month apparently. The review covered actual daily usage, not just features. Queue times during work hours, model switching speeds, the stuff that matters when you're on deadline.
Decided to try it. Cancelled everything else except ChatGPT Plus (trust issues).
What $40 Gets Me Now
Current Setup:
- AskGPT App: $20 (all models, one interface)
- ChatGPT Plus: $20 (backup for when shit breaks)
Down from $80-100 to $40. Not amazing but better.
The mental overhead dropped more than the cost. One password for most stuff. One interface to learn. One place to check history (mostly).
Still not perfect. AskGPT gets slow around 6pm EST. ChatGPT sometimes just decides to be stupid. But it works.
The Real Real Cost
It's not the money. It's the time and mental energy.
$960 a year? Whatever, that's like 2 client projects.
But 2 hours monthly managing subscriptions? 30 minutes daily deciding which AI to use? The stress when your main tool hits limits during deadlines?
That's the real cost.
My friend Tom doesn't use any AI. Still delivers good work. Sometimes I wonder if he's onto something.
But then GPT-4 saves me 4 hours on a project and I remember why I do this dance.
Waiting for Someone to Fix This
You know what I want? The Netflix of AI.
One subscription. Everything included. Smart routing to the best model for each task. No limits that matter. $50/month and I'd sign up immediately.
Until then? My janky $40 two-service setup continues.
Though honestly, GPT-5 will probably drop next month and ruin everything again. Then Claude 3 will come out. Then Google will make Gemini actually good.
The cycle continues.
At least my wife stopped asking about the credit card charges.
